IDS Driver Training & Company Driver Risk Assessments

Company car and van drivers are involved in about one in every four serious road collisions, and every week around 200 road deaths and serious injuries involve fleet drivers. The cost to businesses runs into millions – fleet repairs, insurance, time off work for drivers and missed deadlines to name a few. It is estimated that one in three of the 3 million company cars on the roads will be involved in a collision every year. The Health & Safety at Work Act, Corporate Manslaughter legislation and case law all mean that employers must consider what risks their employees are involved with – even when they are driving.

IDS Driver Training provide company driver risk assessments, fleet driver training and FREE road safety presentations. We now also provide online driver assessments and online driver training. This training will not only reduce risk of collisions involving your fleet drivers, but dramatically reduce costs like insurance, fuel and repair bills. Our modern fleet driver training techniques are a benefit to any business. Furthermore, in today’s health & safety environment, we can assist companies in complying with all the revelvant regulations whilst reducing work related road risk.

Any vehicle which is driven by someone carrying out business on behalf of a company is regarded as a place of work and therefore subject to current legislation. This expressly includes the so-called “Grey fleet” of vehicles owed by the employee but used for company business. Some employers believe, incorrectly, that a valid drivers licence and MOT certificate is sufficient to ensure the safety of their employees and the general public. This could not be much further from the truth.

The cost to industry of work-related collisions is estimated to be £2.6 – £2.9billion per year. Industry estimates vary for the number of companies doing enough work on road risk management but it is pretty safe to say that less than 33% of companies have such a policy which puts the remaining 67% seriously at odds with the legislation.

Benefits of our Fleet Driver Training Services Include…

  • Reduced fleet costs – insurance, repairs, fuel etc
  • Less days off work for drivers, missed orders, bad publicity
  • Compliance with relevant legislation

There are plenty of reasons for employers to look at the operation of their fleet and company car drivers. For that reason, our fleet driver training programmes are based on the needs of the individual client. Our experienced fleet trainers, who are experts in the field of road safety, will offer the best advice possible to your company, whilst providing an extremely high standard of fleet driver training.

Fleet Driver Training can help:

  • the drivers.
  • the company.
  • Road Safety.
  • the community.

IDS Driver Training & Road Risk Assessments – The Reality

  • One in every three road crashes involve a vehicle being driven for work. That’s 3 deaths EVERY DAY invoving company vehicles.
  • Work-related road accidents are the biggest cause of work-related accidental death. Between 800 and 1000 people are killed annually in work-related road traffic accidents compared to approximately 250 fatalities due to other accidents.
  • Company drivers who drive more than 80% of their annual mileage on work related journeys have more than 50% more injury accidents than similar drivers who do no work related mileage.
  • About 300 people are killed each year as a result of drivers falling asleep at the wheel. About 4 in 10 tiredness-related crashes involve someone driving a company vehicle.
  • Company driver assessments and fleet driver training can reduce the risk of collisions by up to 70%

Every single work related road collision can cost a company money in terms of repair, insurance, down time for vehicle and employee, bad publicity etc, etc.

The fleet driver training we offer depends greatly on the individual needs of the client. However, as a guide, we normally offer:

  • Licence and eyesight test
  • Pre-drive vehicle checks
  • Occupational road risk presentation
  • Initial driving assessment
  • Highway code quiz
  • On-road driver training and coaching
  • Demonstration drive if appropriate

This can all be done on a 1:1, 2:1 or 3:1 basis and over a full or half day. Again that all depends on your requirements.
The training we deliver is done on a bespoke basis. If the candidates have a history of speeding fines, we will design a speed awareness related training session. If they have a history of collisons, we can design a course with that in mind. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

IDS Fleet & Company Driver – Risk Assessments

If anyone within your company drives on company business, you are obliged to perform a risk assessment of the activity. If you have 5 or more employees, you are obliged to have this risk assessment written down. This could include delivery van drivers, company car drivers and even occasional drivers who are using their own vehicle – the employer still has a ‘duty of care’ to protect its employees and the general public.

Not all companies want a full day’s training for each of their drivers when the cost of the training and the time needed is taken into account. For that reason, we now offer van driver and company car driver risk assessments.

These company driver assessments take 1.5hrs and include licence and eyesight check, vehicle safety checks, journey planning, highway code and in-car driving assessment. For each candidate, a full written report and risk assessment will be completed along with any recommendations.
Company Driver Risk Assessment Cost:

  • £95 for one candidate
  • £70 each for two or three candidates on same day
  • just £65 each for a maximum of four candidates on same day

This covers the minimum requirement needed for Health and Safety compliance. Obviously, we would discuss what requirements you may have over and above this.
